Eggs & Pancakes

I welcomed myself back to "blog land" with lots of seriousness so here's a fun post! This morning Aaron got a big boy breakfast of eggs and pancakes. I'm not sure how much of it actually made it to his mouth but he gobbled it up! He's a spoiled little cutie! I hope he is as ready as me to be done with baby food!

It made me remember that when Conner was 2-ish he would wake up every morning sayings "Eggs & Pancakes! Eggs & Pancakes!" Like no good morning or anything just "eggs & pancakes!" It was so cute! He's never been one who needs to time to adjust to being awake - once he's up he is ready to take on life and apparently he used to wake up ready for breakfast!

Love my sweet messy babies!

I Wanna be Undignified in the Deep

"I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes."

2 Samuel 6:22

In the quiet stillness of night when everyone is asleep and no one is calling my name and I am not distracted by my "to-do" list and all that comes between me and sleep is one quick, last look at my sleeping children, I silently arrange covers and blankets and bears and whisper simple utterances to my Father that sound something like - let them strong and mighty and faithful like David, let them be missionaries, let them advocate for orphans and the forgotten, let them be fearless soldiers for the cross in everything they do - in short, please God, don't let them be me. Please don't let them be strangled with the need to please people and for everyone to love them, please don't let their insecurities be their hinderance in heeding your call.

I've read this blog post a million times, Brave Moms Raise Brave Kids, and I've got the let your kids run wild outside part of being brave down, but I am not so sure about the brave disciple part. Don't get me wrong I do stuff for the church and for the cross, its just safe things like VBS and Operation Christmas Child - good, safe things. I've been convicted of my thoughts on this - I pray for my kids to be brave and fearless disciples and oh, God has burdened me with a passion and a desire to do this one BIG, BRAVE, SCARY thing and I pray everyday that I get to do it. I'm like Peter, in the boat I think I can walk on water but when I get out of the boat, in the deep, it's a different story.

And so when I pray about the BIG, BRAVE, SCARY thing and I'm inpatiently asking God why He has burdened me with this longing when there are so many obstacles in the way of getting the BIG, BRAVE, SCARY thing done, I never envisioned myself as one of the obstacles in the way. Yet, last week I did an itty, bitty, scary thing and my heart was beating wildly and I felt like I was suffocating when people didn't understand what I was trying to say. I stared at my computer screen frozen in fear and every fleshly part of me wanted to find every delete I button I could hit, yet I knew that I couldn't, that if I wanted to raise brave kids that I had to be a brave mom.

I had to be an example that "our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us and eternal glory that far outweighs them all." 2 Corinthians 4:17. I had to know that while I've been inpatient with God, that through obedience, he is preparing me and my family to do BIG, BRAVE, SCARY things when we do itty, bitty, scary things.  If the BIG, BRAVE, SCARY thing ever comes to pass in the years to come, people will not understand and friends will stop calling and I've told God that I'm okay with that, but it turns out that I'm okay with that in the boat, not in the deep. And well I've got to live in the deep if I'm raising fearless disciples.

I don’t want my kids safe and comfortable. I want them BRAVE. I don’t want to teach them to see danger under every rock, avoiding anything hard or not guaranteed or risky. They are going to encounter a very broken world soon, and if they aren’t prepared to wade into difficult territory and contend for the kingdom against obstacles and tragedies and hardships, they are going to be terrible disciples.
Y'all I desperately want my life story to be wonderfully messy in the eyes of the world. I want so much more than to just be blessed.  Honestly, hearing myself say, "Oh yes I'm so blessed - husband, kids, house, cars, health - check, got it. I must be doing something great for God to love me so much" makes me ill. I desire to be so much more than blessed.

In perfect timing, my Bible study this morning ("Jonah" by Priscilla Shirer) says - "Make sure your life writes a story worth reading." And I want my story and the story of my children to be BIG AND BRAVE AND SCARY so I'm stepping out to live undignified in the deep, may I be humiliated in my own eyes if it brings glory to the King ... these little faces are so worth it . . .

The Indoctrination of our Children

Y'all we are at war and we aren't fighting for land or oil or guns - we are fighting for our kids and the information that is being fed to them in our schools. And many of us are too complacent and blind to realize that there is even a war going on. Some people may be angry at this post and some will wake up and others will simply think that I've gone off the deep end - either way I'm compelled to write it.

Many of you know I am working on my Master's in Education and in my studies I have spent extensive amounts of time researching, analyzing, and debating the Common Core State Standards.

I am usually the lone voice of dissent on my discussion boards in regards to the CCSS. My main objective is because I'm conservative in my political beliefs, therefore, I am not in agreement with national (aka federal - don't be confused by their use of the word national!) standards - I am a "states rights" kind of girl.

Many things I am also learning and generally opposed to in my studies is the shift away from teaching facts to teaching learning.  On the surface the wording and phrasing of teaching learning sounds great. "Oh yes please teach my child to learn!" But by teaching our children to learn, what is actually happening is facts are out the window . . . truth is now all relative to the person and what they believe. You believe the Holocaust didn't happen? Great that's your truth!

Now, yes our kids do need to know how to learn and how to study but they also need concrete truths and facts and history. Consider this from my Foundations of Education textbook - the purpose of formal education is to "provide the knowledge to fulfill the society's expectations of their citizens." Well I don't know about you, dear reader, but I am striving in my parenting to raise my children up exactly the opposite of society's expectations of what they should become.

The Bible tells us not to conform to the world and that is exactly what the federal CCSS is trying to achieve via the indoctrination of our children - conformed citizens to their agenda. And there is no better way to accomplish this then through the public school system where the majority of US children pass through at some point in their lives.

Right about here is probably where you are wondering if I'm nuts . . . well you know what? Unfortunately I am not nuts.  Two months ago if you would have told me that I would no longer be allowed in my child's school - I would have told you that you were crazy . . . but today it is true. Many years ago if you would have told our grandparents that students could not say the Pledge of Allegiance or pray out loud in schools today they would have said you were crazy . . . but today it is true. So today what I'm telling you is that the Enemy is seeking to infiltrate the walls of our schools - even in my tiny rural community - and it is true.

So briefly what does federal CCSS have to do with Enemy infiltration? One of many things, in my opinion, is the focus or shift away from absolute truth.  If from PreK to 12th grade children are taught basically that everything and everybody are okay as long as they think they are okay then where exactly does that leave Jesus - THE TRUTH, THE LIFE, AND THE WAY? Many of you may not think the Enemy cares or participates in such things and that is a very dangerous thought. Let's remember Job 1:7 that says Satan spends his day "roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it." And 1 Peter 5:8 that says "Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." Our kids are ripe for the picking, especially when parents are uninformed or complacent that things like that would never happen at their school.

Those are my spiritual objections. Politically, I'd like to see less of everything from the federal government and that includes curriculum. Inasmuch as I would love to pin blame for this on a certain President in power now we've got to remember that our struggles are against the devil's schemes not politicians (Ephesians 6:10-12).  However, we are not blind to the fact that politicians have agendas and any president/leader would love to see a bunch of kids "educated" to their way of thinking. Y'all it can happen and if we don't pay attention we will never notice until it's too late.

Educationally, I believe the federal CCSS dumbs down our children and focuses too much on cultural sensitivity and social programs than actual education. Take this for instance
Under Common Core, classics such as “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” are of no more academic value than the pages of the Federal Register or the Federal Reserve archives — or a pro-Obamacare opinion essay in The New Yorker. Audio and video transcripts, along with “alternative literacies” that are more “relevant” to today’s students (pop song lyrics, for example), are on par with Shakespeare. (taken from Michelle Malkin)

I'd love for you to read a series of articles that dive into WAY MORE detail than I could ever dream of entitled Rotten to the Core here and here and also Reader Feedback from Rotten to the Core. All three articles are thought provoking, especially the Reader Feedback from teachers and school board members (one member says he only voted for the CCSS because it was required to receive Race to the Top federal stimulus dollars and so on and so forth from lots of readers).

Does our education system need an overhaul? Probably, but this is not the answer. Today my 7 year old was required to read a short passage where I timed his speed - one sentence said "(the girls) both got dressed in hot new clothes."  My 7 YEAR OLD SON was required to read about girls in "hot clothes." Welcome to the Common Core State Standards where anything goes.

I'm dead serious when I say the enemy wants to sneak in our schools and claim our children, but even if for some reason you don't believe we have an enemy, you really need to believe that the investors of the Common Core State Standards DO NOT have the best interest of your child at heart. Our local governments can do a much better job because they actually have to answer to parents and voters, whereas hidden lobbyists and PACs do not.

But we can't win the battle if we don't understand that there IS spiritual warfare going on all around us. Let's not send our kids to the battleground ignorant of what is facing them. Get informed!

Serving

My New Year's Resolution is totally to get the blog back up and running! I miss being to look back over what we've been up to! For now, a little something to tide me and you over.

Oh my gracious, if I've heard this once then I've heard it a thousand times, "I don't like serving at church on Sunday's because I miss worship." Well let me tell you about my weekend . . .

Saturday was our church's first ever, but definetly not last, Servolution.  A revolution of service . . . you know because "That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not be served."  The whole church gathered up this past Saturday to serve our community. Groups did home repairs, groups passed out gifts and visited the apartments across the road, groups went to the retirement apartments and cleaned apartments, groups did yardwork, groups visited nursing homes, and so on.

Ryan was doing electrical repairs and I had the kids with me so we selected going to two nursing homes in Mansfield to sing Christmas carols and pass out goodies to the residents. Let me just say, I've been in church all of my life and church's love to go to nursing homes and sing, so this is not my first nursing home rodeo. My normal nursing home behavior is sing and then pretend to be busy with something else so that I don't have to actually visit with anyone. I spend more time visiting with the people I came with then the people I went to minister to and encourage.

My heart belongs with dirty and forgotten children not old people.  However, before we left, as part of our 25 days of Christmas, I had Mason read that day's activity and it was "Love Jesus and celebrate His birth by serving others." And I had referenced James 1:27 . . . loosely paraphased - "good religion is to look after orphans and widows." I discussed with him what a widow was and that not everyone there would be a widow but the underlying message was to look after those forgotten.

On the drive there, we continued to discuss what a nursing home was and the types of people we would encounter and why they were there and slowly it began to hit me that these people are just like orphans in a way - at the places we went, some residents but not all, were essentially abandoned there . . . they were helpless, they were lonely, they needed a friend, they needed a little Jesus with skin - i.e. personal touch from a believer.  I began to pray for God to open my eyes and heart to truly visit and serve these people, while simultaneously begging him not to burden with a passion for them because I already don't know what to do with my passion for the kiddos I've never met but so dearly love! (well that's a lie . . . I know exactly what I want to do but apparently it's not what God wants, darn it!).

So nothing earth shaking happened but it was truly a blessing to step out of my comfort zone and to hold hands with people and to ask for and use their first name and converse with people at the nursings homes! It was a blessing to be able to do this with my children too! I was so thankful that I went and so blessed to meet Ms. Stella and Ms. Sallie and the many others that I was able to look into their eyes and hold their sweet hands and and unwrap baking cups off of cupcakes - sweet blessings indeed.

After it was over we had a princess over to play!

The next morning was crazy - Aaron was sick and on my way to church I realized my tire was going flat.  It was one of those mornings where you really just want to sit in church and sing and go home, but I was scheduled to SERVE in the nursery that day.  I spent my morning with some lovely little preschoolers and had the best time!! Oh I got to snuggle a sweet little girl for about 20 minutes while she was missing her mama.  The kids were learning about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and their memory verse was from Joshua 1:9 - " Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” I got to whisper some sweet prayers in her sleepy ear about that God has not left her and that her mama will come back for her.  Precious thing woke up and was ready to play! With my hands free, I soon became a horse and was instructed "giddy-up!" Joyful morning!

Straight from nursery, I ran to the kitchen to help serve a meal to guests and those interested in learning more about our church and what we do.  I poured tea, passed our napkins, sliced cake, picked up dirty plates, etc. Nothing glorious but oh so fun!

When I left Fellowship Community Church, I felt so refreshed and uplifted and it dawned on me, that my service was worship! It was so rewarding and easy . . .  His burden is easy and his yoke is light.  It wasn't required of me, but serving others in so many ways this weekend was better than any service I could sat through.

Serving others, it's sort of biblical, you should give it a try!

And afterward, I got to enjoy the view and bounty of God's creation . . .
